I just finished the sixth petal in the Flower Exercise. I call this one the “money petal”.  With this one, I formed a budget to determine how much money I would need to be able to spend that much.  It was an interesting exercise, and I got the information that I needed.

With that one done, I have just one petal left.  For today, I will now unwind.

Well, knowledges, to be exact.

For a quick update on the Flower Exercise, I have completed the fifth petal.  I am just itching to finish this so that I can begin finding a job that matches as many of the seven petals as possible.  The more that match, the better.  If the job matches all seven, then I just found my dream job.

What’s next is the last two petals, and the explanation of the Flower Exercise is on its way.  Believe me, there will be a lot to share on this.  And whether you are looking for work or not, this is really beneficial and a real eye-opener.

In looking at this week at a glance, I have made a lot of progress.  I have completed four out of seven petals for the Flower Exercise in the “What Color is Your Parachute?” book.  With that in mind, I am taking a break from the exercise.  I will resume on Memorial Day, with the goal of completing my Flower Diagram next week.  All will be explained, so stay tuned.

My, this flower exercise has been fun and fulfilling so far!

I just finished the fourth petal, and have applied for three jobs at Kelly Services:  Administrative Assistant, Document Administrator, and Cross Business Representative.

What remains is the remainder of my day.  I will now unwind before seeing a movie a little later on.  Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales.  That should be fun, and a great reward for all my hard work that I’ve been doing this week.

Time to wrap this up and unwind.

Muse:  Phew!  Today’s training was rough.  I won against Luke again, but it was a lot of work.  I’m getting there!

I was planning on completing two petals today, but due to time constraints, I decided to stop at one.

So far, the exercise is pretty good, and is something that I recommend to anyone who wants to gain a clear understanding of all the main facets of who they are.  With facets like People, Workplace, Skills, Purpose, Knowledges, Salary, and Geography,  it paints a pretty clear picture of who you are.  A diamond is another good way to compare it, but I digress.

There is so much more that I would like to explain regarding this exercise, and I will do this very soon.  Expect a full explanation of the Flower Exercise when I have the next couple petals complete.  This is exciting and fun, and I look forward to sharing this with you.

With Friday about over, I can say that this weekend is off to a good start so far.

I worked my shift and was finally able to unwind.  I played some of my game and will now get ready for bed pretty soon.

And for me, the case is in effect like most Thursdays.  Attend the Toastmasters meeting, go to bed, and wait for Friday to roll around.  I’m ready to work my Friday shift now, and get the weekend started.  However, there is just one obstacle remaining.  I must cross the guardtower of Thursday evening.  Once this happens, I am clear to move right into Friday.

Having that said, it’s now time to get ready for a Toastmasters meeting.  After I get home from it, I will go to bed.

This time, it’s through Kelly Services.  I found a position for a document administrator and applied for it.  If I am qualified, they will give me a call.  In their fine print, they have advised all applicants that due to the high volume of submissions, only qualified candidates will be selected.  With that, I will cross my fingers and go from there.  If you have over 20 qualified candidates, it still comes down to luck.

In addition to that, I will continue looking for more openings and reading What Color is Your Parachute? The next chapter that I’ll be reading outlines some tips in interviewing for a job.  These tips will become all the more relevant when the opportunity for an interview does come up.  I may jump ahead, as I would really like to take that detailed self-inventory.  This will really help in determining where I should put my focus.  I already know that I thrive on leadership and I love to serve.  Teaching, coaching, and leading may come up in there somewhere.  When I know the color of my parachute, I’ll really be able to make some progress, as I will be applying for jobs that cater to that focus.

Later on, I will be having a Mother’s Day dinner at my grandparent’s house.  It will be with my parents, grandparents, aunt, and cousin.  It should be quite enjoyable and I look forward to it.  That is pretty much this day in a nutshell.

And it’s also time to read more of my “What Color is Your Parachute?”  book.  Everyone.  If you are experiencing a career change, got laid off, or are looking for a better job, I strongly recommend that you check this book out.  Richard N. Bolles, the author of this book, has updated this book for the past 40 years, and it is filled with up-to-date information about the job industry and the strategies that must be implemented to find a job in the current age and economy that we live in.

Now, I’ve given it my all, and it’s time to continue.  I have applied for a job, got it forwarded to the hiring manager, got a good word put in for me, and I have not so much as gotten an interview for it.

If we look at the lessons from this book, Bolles describes the purpose of HR well.  For them, it’s an elimination game.  When you have over 200 applicants for one position, there not much time to go through every one.  The process must be narrowed down to at least eight to ten applicants, with a second interview narrowing it down to about three to five.  From there, the candidate is decided.

For us, we want it to be the hiring game.  And this requires bypassing the elimination filters.  Do you know someone at that job that you’re applying for?  Get a referral from them.  Get a few letters of recommendation from a few friends that you know well.  And by friends, I mean ones that you know professionally.  They be a mentor, or someone that you know at an organization.  Doing this will bypass the elimination filters and get you to the very top.

So now it continues, and I’ll let you in on a secret.  The best job that you want to have is something that you really love to do.  Don’t choose a job just for the pay, but base it off of the skills and talents that you possess.

Having that said,  the search continues.  The plan for next week?  Get some good letters of recommendation and start using them with my applications.  And it’s time for the weekend…
