Me & My Muse – Day 1187: Return of the Radio

The worst thing happened at work today.  And no, it’s not the other store’s inventory in the walk-in refrigerator this time.  It’s the worst thing to ever return to the store: the radio.

Yes.  The radio.  When someone’s radio died at work years ago, I thought that I would never see it again.  But it came back.  Someone else brought one in.

Now I have absolutely no problems with listening to music at work.  What bugs me is that no one can ever agree on one radio station.  If I like one radio station, the other person will hate it.  If the other person likes the radio station, I will absolutely hate it.  What’s my preference?  JOE FM, a station that plays pretty much everything.  Now while they say that, they play mostly 80’s music.  This is in contrast to WIOG, a Top 40 station that I absolutely can’t stand.  And if you want the full story of my dislike of Top 40 music, read this older post.  I go into more depth there.

So at work, I hear the radio being turned on while I’m in the bathroom.  After getting out, I decide to turn it to JOE FM.  While I do prefer Family LIfe Radio, I would figure that JOE would be good enough for everyone right?  Wrong!

One person complained about an old 80’s song that I had absolutely no problem with.  “Ugh!  What’s this?  I don’t like this song.”  With that, they changed the dial to the station that plays nothing but Top 40 BS: WIOG.

This made me really upset.  From my understanding, this was why the radio was done away with in the first place.  I think the main reason was that so you could hear customers in the lobby, but I like my reason better.  If no two people can agree on one radio station, what’s the point of having a radio in the store?  If anything, this would hurt morale.  Happy employees enjoying the music on one side and bickering employees being tortured on the other.

When I was more than halfway done with dough, the geek arrived.  We’ll call him Mike to protect his real identity.  Mike’s a pretty cool guy to work with.  He’s not the fastest and the most efficient, but he’s pretty on task when it comes to getting stuff done.

With the station still playing the garbage I hated and the other employees busy in the front, it was time to employ my secret mission.  Change the station back to JOE FM.  I would wait until I turned the mixer on and would use that as a diversion.  The mixer would be too noisy that they would even be able to tell that the station got changed.  The plan was awesome.

So that’s what I did.  I changed it back and it was on JOE FM for the rest of the time until I left.

This goes back to my main point.  If nobody’s going to agree on one station, just get rid of the radio and make do without it like we used to.  If the radio was my own, I would smash it before their very eyes.  I don’t need a radio while I’m working.  I love music, but there’s a time and a place for that.  And if nobody can agree on one station, then I think that our store would be better off without the radio.

The radio is back, but I’m hoping that someone can get rid of it soon.  I hated it in the past, and I don’t really want it to become something that hurts morale at work.

Remedy:  Talking about music?  Anyway,  Muse is sleeping right now.  She’s just over a day old today.

I see.  She was 20 hours old at midnight?  That would make her 15 inches long and 2.5 pounds.  Tinier than a preemie.

Remedy:  I just wanted to see what you were doing.  Muse is still sleeping.  She has been sleeping a lot today.  Enjoy your evening!

I surely will!

*Remedy vanishes in a beam of light*

Well, there’s my two cents about having music at work.  To be honest, I think that it should be something that you should enjoy.  When you try to share that with other people, they may not enjoy it.  That’s what makes having music at work challenging in mixed company.

Time to enjoy the remainder of the evening.  I will now get ready for tomorrow’s DEC meeting…

Today’s high is going to be 77 degrees and the silver lining is being done with this week.

To those of you who have strong feelings about your preference in music, I hope that you all have a fantastic day.

Nurture:  She just woke up a few minutes ago.  I fed her, changed her and she fell back asleep.  She’s so sleepy being just a day old…

Muse:  *snore* Eeeeeahhh… *snore*
